In 1988, Gaja purchased the Sperss vineyard in Barolo, which sits on the historic and celebrated Marenca-Rivetta site in Serralunga; this wine is Angelo’s most brooding and concentrated expression, displaying all the Serralunga characteristics of asphalt, tar, smoke and spice, and marked with prominent ripe, dark fruit and ironclad tannins. A blend of 94% Nebbiolo with the remainder Barbera, this wine ferments in stainless steel for three weeks and ages for a year each in barrique and botti before bottling.

Underbrush, toast, menthol, grilled herb and star anise aromas lead the way. Firmly structured but loaded with finesse, the taut palate delivers Morello cherry, raspberry, licorice and a toasted note while assertive, close-grained tannins provide the framework. It’s still young and austere so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2023–2033.
