Always a sophisticated, layered wine, the ’11 Sorì Tildìn is outstanding. This vintage shows a brooding profile, laying its brambly fruit on a foundation of scorched earth, grilled herbs, crushed granite, dark spices and warm saddle leather. Unusually accessible, this Sorì Tildìn has the tannic structure to keep it the age-worthy expression collectors know and love. The second single-vineyard Gaja expression to be bottled individually in 1970, Sorì Tildìn is a blend of 95% Nebbiolo and the remainder Barbera. The grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel; then the wine ages in a year each of barrique and botti before bottling. Of the three Gaja single-vineyard Barbaresco wines, Sorì Tildin displays the roundest tasting profile, with a rich body, subtle texture, and fine, ripe tannins; in great vintages this wine will develop for decades.

The 2011 Sori Tildin is always a wine of great aromatic potential and the 2011 vintage is no exception. This Barbaresco-inspired red bursts from the glass with enormous verve and personality. Mineral notes of pencil shaving and brimstone come on the heels of red fruit and red currant. Drink 2018-2035.

An absolutely brilliant wine, the 2011 Sorl Tildln bristles with energy, precision and tension. In this vintage the higher altitude of Sorl San Tildln vis–vis Costa Russi comes through loud and clear. Freshly cut flowers, small red berries, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks are all very much alive in a striking, nuanced Sorl Tildln that expresses both the class of this site and the generosity of the year. — Antonio Galloni
